Aim of the project

Development of feed additives to maintain health of the intestinal tract of production animals

Background of the project

A healthy and functional digestiv tract of farm animals is the basis for a cost-effective, economic production. Already slight damages to the intestinal tract may deteriorate feed turnover, resulting in increased costs per kg food produced (meat, milk, eggs). Along with the growing population worldwide request for animal comestibles will increase. In order to cope with this request , the efficiency of farm animals (i.e. daily wieght gain, laying performance and feed consumption and turnover) has to be raised. An increase in production per farm may be gained as well by increasing the stock rate (animals/m²) which interferes with animal health, performance and behaviour.

Diseases of the intestinal tract, such as enterites of dysfunctional liver metabolism occur. The maintenance of a healthy digestive tract of production animals is therefore of priority.

Oxidative stress is integral part of inflammatory process going along with diseases. For a preventing treatment of these diseases it is reasonable to inhibit oxidative stress.

In this project phytogenic antioxidants are developped als feed additives, that prevent effect induced by oxidative stress, thus supporting the health status of farm animals. In vitro methods developped by BioMed-zet Life Science GmbH are integral part of the R&D process of DELACON Biotechnik GmbH. BioMed-zet Life Science GmbH characterises the health supporting properties of different feed additives, while DELACON Biotechnik GmbH formulates selected compounds and markets them.
