Foto Walter PfallerDear participants,

on behalf of zet, the Austrian Centre for Alternative and Complementary Methods to Animal Testing, and MEGAT, the Middle European Society for Alternative Methods to Animal Testing, I cordially welcome you to the "Linz-Congress" of 2008.

Over the years the "Linz-Congress" became one of the most relevant scientific events worldwide in the field of alternatives to animal testing and nowadays it is considered as European Congress on Alternatives to Animal Testing.

The organising committee invests all his efforts in order to address the largest possible number of scientists from all over Europe, potentially interested in this field. Again English as the official congress language has been selected.

The congress participants will be updated on the European Communities and member state efforts to implement the 3R principles into academic - basic biomedical and applied – industrial (including the cosmetics industry) research as well as regarding the status of implementation by European regulatory authorities. In this context the program traditionally will focus to legal and ethical aspects as well as to problems arising from efforts to standardise and harmonise in vitro approaches, specifically cell culture techniques.

We further think it is of importance to review the newest developments in the development of the guidelines on European chemicals and cosmetics policy in context with the use of alternatives principles. Another hot topic will be the revision of the EU-directive 86/609, which effects all scientists, companies, governmental authorities which act in the field of animal testing and alternatives to animal testing.

Last but not least the programme will pay specific attention on new technologies and methods expanding our repertoire of 3R related experimental approaches.

As in the past we will consciously avoid parallel sessions at the congress, but instead give a high value to poster presentations. The best and most innovative posters will be awarded, which should help to convince and motivate young scientists to contribute effectively to the development of alternative methods in the future.

We are looking forward to welcome a large number of participants and scientists interested in promoting 3R related research.

Yours sincerely,

Walter Pfaller
scientific head of zet
vice-president of MEGAT
